What Is a Gynecological Mesh?
A urogynecologic mesh implant is a medical device used to repair pelvic organ prolapse and stress urinary incontinence, usually caused by pregnancy and childbirth. It is permanently implanted along the weakened vaginal wall for repair or support the urethra or bladder neck. There are three main surgical procedures:
- Transvaginal mesh
- Transabdominal mesh
- Mesh sling
There are two types of surgical mesh: absorbable, which will degrade as new tissue growth replaces the mesh, and non-absorbable, which a permanent device to help repair and support the organs.
The Problems With Transvaginal Mesh
Recent news reports state that Boston Scientific, one of the largest manufacturers of gynecological mesh, is currently the subject of thousands of lawsuits on behalf of women claiming the mesh causes injury and serious pain. According to media reports, many women report the transvaginal mesh can cause an inflammatory reaction which can lead to a shooting and uncomfortable pain.
Despite Boston Scientifics’ claims that the material is safe, a “60 Minutes” report found that the plastic – made of a polypropylene approved by FDA yet have raised concerns by plastic suppliers – used in these devices are unsafe to use in the human body.
Am I Eligible for the Gynecological Mesh Lawsuit?
Despite the assurances of the manufacturers that these devices and serious complications were rare, there have been almost 3,000 adverse events reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in the past three years. Complications of a defective transvaginal mesh include:
- Stabbing, uncomfortable pain
- Bleeding
- Urinary infections
- Urinary tract infections
- Pain during intercourse
- Erosion
- Organ Perforation
- The need for extra surgeries
The only way to fix a transvaginal mesh is to undergo several surgeries to remove the device and repair the area, if necessary. If the mesh causes perforation of the organs, this requires very expensive surgery. This means you will miss work and it could take months for you to recover from another surgery. Expenses will pile up quickly and you will need help paying your expenses. Since the primary cause of these surgeries is because of a defective medical device, you have the right to sue.
