- Tissue necrosis and amputation: In the most extreme cases, prolonged tissue damage and loss of circulation can cause gangrene. When tissue death cannot be reversed, partial or full amputation of a hand, arm, foot, or leg may be necessary to save the patient’s life.
When failures in care allow IV infiltration to progress, the resulting harm can be severe, irreversible, and, in some cases, life-threatening.
