Case: A 7-week-old infant was admitted to a hospital for a high fever. A hospital nurse was having difficulty trying to insert an IV needle into the baby’s arm to take a blood culture. The nurse decided to wrap the baby’s arm with a warm pack using a cloth diaper. The nurse left the warm pack on the baby’s arm for several minutes. When the pack was removed, it had inflicted 3rd degree burns on the inside of the baby’s arm. Luckily, no skin grafting was necessary. But the baby suffered permanent scarring to the insider of her arm, which could be subject to later scar revision surgery. The baby incurred medical expense of nearly $5,000. The settlement of $750,000 includes an annuity that is worth $450,000.
